By: Kristie Grzywinski, Senior Technical Manager, Safe Quality Food Institute

The inspection of food safety controls traditionally achieved via an inspector with a checklist is a thing of the past. Today’s assessment of food management systems is being conducted through third-party accredited audits by a unique type of auditor who can demonstrate a deep technical knowledge of quality and food safety management system principles and possesses the ability to critically assess potential hazards and knowledge of international food regulations relative to the target product and its process.

The competencies of an auditor extend beyond food safety, encompassing a broad range of interpersonal skills, including the capacity to communicate to people at all levels and the ability to collect objective information through effective interviewing, listening and observing. Above all, auditors must commit to the highest standards of professional integrity and ethical values.

If you like traveling, working alongside other food safety professionals and making a difference in the safety of the food you eat, then a career in food safety systems auditing might be for you!

Since 2013, the FMI Foundation has offered scholarships to those students of food science and agriculture programs interested in taking food systems auditing to the next level. These extremely competitive scholarships are based primarily on academic ability, leadership potential, motivation and initiative, and a demonstrated passion for the food industry and the auditing profession.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2015/2016 academic year. Visit www.fmi.org/foundation/scholarships to view eligibility requirements and application criteria.
