FMI engaged with the Biden-Harris Administration on implementation of the newly enacted DRIVE Safe pilot program, which created 3,000 apprenticeship slots for 18-21 year olds seeking a commercial driver’s license (CDL). The Department of Labor (DOL) administers the already established federal apprenticeship umbrella, which facilitates national program standards for apprenticeships of all professional categories, including trucking. The Department of Transportation (DOT) administers the DRIVE Safe pilot but in order to be eligible, a company must have an approved apprenticeship program that comes under a National Program Standard through DOL. This session with DOL and its program vendor FASTPORT provides an overview of the federal apprenticeship program and steps a company must take to have a federal Registered Apprenticeship program.
