Program category : 2022 2022 Health

Origins:

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for American women. “Despite progress in the detection and treatment of this terrible disease, racial and ethnic disparities persist, and the NCBI reports that African-American women have a 41 percent greater chance of dying from breast cancer than white women, although white women have higher incidence of the disease,” the NCBI concluded. To address this disparity in the St. Louis region, Schnucks teamed with the Pink Ribbon Girls of St. Louis and Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis (ULSTL) to encourage women in underserved communities in the area to get mammograms. As part of the “Treasure Your Chest” program, the first 1,500 mammogram clients living in one of 21 underserved zip codes of north St. Louis County and north St. Louis City received a $50 Schnucks gift card along with other resources to promote healthy living and eating choices. Pink Ribbon Girls is a non-profit organization which provides healthy meals, rides to treatment, house cleaning services, cancer education and peer support to breast and gynecological cancer patients and their families. These services are provided free of charge to all qualifying clients independent of age, stage or socio-economic status.

Contribution:

In addition to four gift card distribution locations at Urban League offices, Schnucks volunteers staffed two community gift cards distribution events. The company donated more than $75K in gift cards and created printed materials to highlight the importance of healthy eating and wellness.
