WASHINGTON, DC — April 28, 2004 — The Food Marketing Institute (FMI) announced today that Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson will formally launch the first-ever Healthy Living Pavilion at the 2004 FMI Show on Sunday, May 2 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in downtown Chicago.

“FMI is very excited that Secretary Thompson is taking time from his busy schedule to join us for the opening of the Healthy Living Pavilion,” said FMI President and CEO Tim Hammonds. “We are also pleased to have HHS as a co-presenter of the exhibit. Now more than ever, American consumers are concerned about their health and they are seeking solutions to maintaining balanced, healthy lifestyles, and HHS is leading the way.”

Thompson will offer remarks at the FMI Show’s opening session on Sunday morning, entitled “Food Marketing Industry Speaks.” He will then join FMI President and CEO Tim Hammonds and other industry leaders on the Show exhibit floor for a welcome at the Healthy Living Pavilion.

Consisting of a blend of dynamic exhibits, educational programming and presentations, the Healthy Living Pavilion is designed to bring awareness to the important role food retailers and wholesalers can have as the nation sheds unwanted pounds. Key features include:

Daily Fun Walks: Every morning during the show, FMI will host a chartered course around the exhibit floor, identifying key exhibits associated with health-oriented
products, services and information. Celebrities, health care workers and others will be encouraged to join the walk and help lead the way to a healthier industry.

“Meet the Experts” Panels: Interactive panel discussions will be hosted at the Pavilion each day, focusing on a variety of wellness issues such as establishing a healthy lifestyle; managing health conditions; the role of the pharmacy in wellness education; and the specific health needs of different costumer segments. HHS representatives will have a role in each of the panels.

Self-Tour Guides: Self-tour guides will be made available centered around topical issues such as low-carb diets, cardiovascular health, diet and weight management, healthy snacks, diabetes, natural and organic products, women’s health and men’s health.

Special Events: Cholesterol screenings, bone density tests, blood pressure checks and other health measures screenings will be conducted at the Pavilion each day, as well as cooking demonstrations, book signings and other selected special events.
