WASHINGTON, DC — March 2, 2004 — The Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and Pearson Prentice Hall today announced the launch of the first online food safety training program designed specifically for retail employees: SuperSafeMark™ Quick Reference to Retail Best Practices in Food Safety and Sanitation Online, based on the textbook of the same name published by Pearson Prentice Hall, written by Nancy Rue, Ph.D., RN and Ana Graf Williams , Ph.D.

The program, built by LearnSomething.com, Inc., is the most recent addition to Pearson Prentice Hall’s FMI-sponsored SuperSafeMark™ line of food safety training materials for the food retail environment. The training program covers critical food safety skills such as preventing food-borne illness, avoiding cross contamination, cleaning and sanitizing, and maintaining safe temperatures. It is based on the most current Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Code.

Also available on CD-ROM, the course features multimedia illustrations and activities in easy-to-understand language with clear examples. Audio guidance is included throughout to accommodate multiple learning styles and reading levels. Extensive practice exercises in the 60-minute program help employees retain critical information and gauge their progress.

Companies can customize the program to include their own corporate branding and policies and procedures. Organizations can also track employee participation, progress and completion through a robust reporting interface.

Online versions of SuperSafeMark™ are sold through www.supersafemark.com CD-ROM versions and customized packages are distributed through Pearson Prentice Hall and LearnSomething. For more information, visit www.supersafemark.com.

FMI is planning a second quarter 2004 release of an online and CD-ROM version of the training program designed to prepare food protection managers for certification — SuperSafeMark™ Guide to Retail Best Practices in Food Safety and Sanitation Online. To schedule a demonstration or for more information, contact sales@learnsomething.com or call (850) 385-7915.

“Our members understand that to really ensure food safety, not only is it important to invest in programs for food safety manager certification, but it is also critical to make sure all employees know basic food safety techniques,” said Jill Hollingsworth, DVM, FMI vice president of food safety programs. “By including an online employee-level training program in the SuperSafeMark™ line, we offer the industry a convenient way to provide this critical information to employees.”
