What Grocery Store Managers Like About Their Job
By: Lucas Darnell, Director of Membership, Food Marketing Institute

Through community fundraising initiatives, local events and daily interaction with customers, grocery store managers are at the forefront of America’s communities.  At FMI, we serve our community of store managers through ongoing initiatives like our Store Manager Awards. These annual awards recognize exceptional supermarket store managers who generate sales growth, provide great customer service, contribute to attaining company goals, and are an integral part of the communities in which they serve. Check out these videos from the 2014 Store Manager Awards.

In addition to our annual awards, FMI works with Harold Lloyd Presents and the Retail Feedback Group (RFG) to survey our grocery store managers and find out what makes them tick.  Here are some lessons learned from the 2014 survey:

  1. More than 90 percent of grocery store managers report loving their job.
  2. Both men and women store managers agree that “managing a supermarket is a rewarding occupation.”
  3. Work-life balance is a worry for some store managers, with about 30% reporting this as a concern.
  4. Store managers have people skills with more than 80% percent claiming to be very knowledgeable in this area.
  5. About 20 percent of store managers feel there could be better encouragement for physical and emotional health by their employer.
  6. Half of store managers that have bonus plans report they are very motivating.
  7. Store managers report what they like most about their job is “working with employees” and “interacting with customers.”
