Mark Hubbard, Food City
Mark Hubbard is the store manager for Food City in Kingsport, Tenn. Mark has been in the grocery business since 1984 and joined the Food City team in 2004. Today he manages one of Food City’s flagship locations—a 55,000-square-foot store that was the largest ever constructed by the retail supermarket chain at the time of opening. Mark has earned respect and admiration in his ability to motivate his associates, so much so that his associates recently surprised him by purchasing their own T-shirts for use at special events with the moniker, “TEAM HUBBARD. Mark currently manages a team of 195 associates, yet maintains one of the lowest turnover rates within the company and also chairs his district’s Leadership Committee. Mark’s store is heavily invested in the community; his store annually participates in the local Santa Train, which last year distributed more than 15 tons of items, and Kingsport’s annual Fun Fest, providing snacks for thousands of runners and hosting a neighborhood block party before the race. Under Mark’s leadership and guidance, the Food City store thrives. In 2014 it was the company’s highest volume store with a total net profit increase of 15.1%.
William Martin, GIANT/MARTIN’S
Camp Hill, Pennsylvania
William (Bill) Martin is a store manager for GIANT/MARTINS in Camp Hill, Penn. Bill began his career as a cashier and rose through the ranks to become a store manager in 1985. Today he runs one of the largest stores in the division—in 2014 sales increased by more than $100,000 all while new competition moved in. Bill’s selfless dedication to his employees and emphasis on customer service has distinguished him throughout his career. In 2014 Bill's store hosted a dinner for all associates who received customer compliments during the course of the year. More than 50 employees attended, which is a true testament to their commitment to customer service. Bill works with a dedicated team of associates who genuinely care about the community, as evidenced by their front-end solicitation earnings exceeding $50,000 for Children's Miracle Network, Support Our Troops, Bag Hunger and the United Way. Bill and a team of associates also helped the community by building a Humana/Kaboom playground for a local school.
Will McDevitt, Weis Markets Inc.
Will McDevitt is a store manager for Weis Markets Inc. in Fogelsville, Penn. Will instills and nurtures a culture of creativity and service that resulted in a 60% increase in sales and 90% increase in net income in 2014. Will and his team focus on the fundamentals of food retailing and they are known for their excellent event sales, including holiday event photos surrounded by seasonal product elaborately displayed for sale. At the Grand Opening of Will’s store, his team collected more than $50,000 in local donations and they continue to maintain close relationships with the non-profits that received the donations, including two local volunteer fire departments and two high school booster clubs. Most recently Will’s store helped generate a $40,000 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank. Still, customers are the clear winners as they express a 91% satisfaction rate with their shopping experience. In January, out of 163 stores, Will’s store was recognized as Weis Markets’ 2014 Store of the Year Grand Champion.
