FMI Presents 2002 Neighborhood Partnership Award to Farm Fresh Supermarkets For Supporting Fight Against Cancer

January 27, 2003
WASHINGTON, DC — January 27, 2003 — In recognition of excellence and dedication to community programs, Farm Fresh Supermarkets, Virginia Beach, VA, a SUPERVALU INC. company, has been presented with the 2002 Neighborhood Partnership Award by the Food Marketing Institute (FMI).

Focusing on youth development, community partnerships, health initiatives and hunger-related programs, the Award is a national competition developed by FMI to recognize retail and wholesale member companies for initiatives that revitalize and invigorate communities.

The Farm Fresh “Round Up” campaign raises money to help children in the Hampton Roads, VA area fight cancer. Throughout the year, the company and its Farm Fresh Charitable Foundation team up with customers, associates and vendor partners to raise money to support the Childhood Cancer Program at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD). Farm Fresh shoppers are encouraged to “round up” their purchase to the next even dollar — or add additional dollars to their grocery total each time they shop.

Since its inception in 2001, “Round Up” has netted over $700,000 for CHKD. The four-year campaign aims to raise over $1 million to support the program.

“FMI applauds Farm Fresh for its selfless support and dedication to the Hampton Roads community,” said Todd Turner, vice president of membership and urban affairs at FMI. “Their contributions to the fight against cancer are admirable and exemplify the purpose of the Neighborhood Partnership Award.”

“Farm Fresh is proud of the support from our customers, associates and vendor partners for their help with this valuable and worthwhile campaign,” said Farm Fresh President and COO Ron E. Dennis. “Thanks to everyone’s efforts, many children will now be helped to fight and hopefully beat cancer.”

Farm Fresh will receive a formal plaque recognizing their program, as well as recognition in FMI publications and on the FMI Web site.
