At a press conference here today, FMI President and CEO Tim Hammonds joined Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, who announced the partnership with FMI and associations representing other industries that employ teens.
“For millions of Americans,” Hammonds said, “their very first job is in a retail food store. We are proud of the role our industry plays teaching young people good work habits, which will benefit them for the rest of their lives. We want that first job to be both safe and rewarding, and provide a real-world complement to their education in school.
“I commend Secretary Chao and President Bush for their leadership in creating this program. It will indeed show how youth rules help ensure that teens have the best possible experience as they enter the workplace.
“FMI will work with our member companies — which offer job opportunities in 26,000 U.S. stores — to promote the program among their teenage associates and their families.”
As part of this program, DOL has set up a Web site (www.youthrules.dol.gov), including guides to federal and state labor laws, training materials, and posters and stickers that employers can order. Links to YouthRules! have been posted throughout the FMI Web site (www.fmi.org).
Food Marketing Institute (FMI) conducts programs in public affairs, food safety, research, education and industry relations on behalf of its nearly 1,250 food retail and wholesale member companies in the United States and around the world. FMI’s U.S. members operate more than 25,000 retail food stores and almost 22,000 pharmacies with a combined annual sales volume of nearly $650 billion. FMI’s retail membership is composed of large multi-store chains, regional firms and independent operators. Its international membership includes 126 companies from more than 65 countries. FMI’s nearly 330 associate members include the supplier partners of its retail and wholesale members.
