State Government Relations

Patrick A. Davis is vice president of state government relations at the Food Marketing Institute (FMI).  As such, he plans and directs all activities of the State Government Relations department, which monitors and helps develop industry responses to key state legislative and regulatory issues affecting the retail food industry, such as food safety, competitive electricity, bottle deposits, pharmacy restrictions, and the electronic transfer of government benefits.  The State Government Relations department works in close cooperation with FMI member companies and state associations.

Prior to assuming his current position, Davis was president of Alliance Consulting LLC, providing public affairs and marketing consulting to FMI and other food-industry clients.  Before founding Alliance Consulting LLC in 2008, he spent 19 years with FMI, holding numerous responsibilities.  These including eleven years as president of the North American Perishable Agricultural Receivers (NAPAR), a national trade association, in alliance with FMI, representing produce wholesale distributors.  He also managed FMI’s strategic initiatives — aggregated-buying programs that harness the buying power of FMI’s vast membership to achieve the lowest possible prices on several unique products and services.  He also served ten years as FMI’s director of eastern operations, supporting state associations in representing the interests of their members-in-common.

Prior to joining FMI, Davis held government relations positions with the National Restaurant Association and Safeway Stores, Inc.  Before joining Safeway he owned and operated a coastal resort in Kennebunkport, ME.  Davis is a graduate of Cornell University.
