Family Meals State Resolutions/Proclamations

One of the few silver linings emerging from the pandemic storm clouds has been America’s rediscovery of the nutritional, economic, emotional, and social benefits of the family meal.  This period of adjusting to a new normal provides us the opportunity to encourage Americans to stay strong with family meals and build upon their rekindled health and relational gains. 

Please add your voice to the chorus of food retailers and food manufacturers encouraging consumers to continue enjoying family meals together by proclaiming September as Family Meals Month.  This nationwide effort provides another great opportunity to thank the supermarket heroes that kept the country fed throughout the pandemic!

There are many compelling reasons to make family meals proclamation in your state:

• Research shows that family meals have numerous health and societal benefits for everyone who eats together
  • Children and teens who eat more meals with their family are more successful in school; and are less likely to experiment with risky behaviors such as drug use, alcohol consumption or smoking.
  • Frequent family meals enhance family connection and communication, which contributes to increased self-esteem in the youngsters. 
  • Meals at home are healthier and improve fruit and vegetable consumption
  • Meals at home are associated with lower Body Mass Index (BMI) and
  • Meals prepared and eaten at home are more economical.
