Giant Food
Baltimore, Maryland
Keeping a lid on employee turnover is tough in any setting these days and had been a particularly difficult task in this location in Baltimore City. That roadblock didn’t faze Amy, though, who deployed a host of workforce development incentives that ultimately led to a notable 40% reduction in turnover.
Her ability to attract and retain team members is a testament to her leadership style that is billed as both collaborative and competitive. To create a positive, inclusive and productive work environment, she offered technology training programs that addressed digital literacy challenges, worked tirelessly to mentor and develop new store managers, clearly communicated and followed up on daily store standards, and, on a broad scale, created an overarching culture of empowerment.
Indeed, empowerment is a central theme of Amy’s management mission. As she empowered department managers, they, in turn, fostered a can-do attitude among their own teams. She also introduced an employee recognition program that has proven quite popular. As a result of these and other efforts, this store experienced a 6% increase in associate engagement.
Other measures of success under her leadership exemplify her ability to motivate her team for the betterment of the store and its service to customers. Her store has been recognized as one of the best in the Giant Food brand and has delivered significant year-over-year sales growth. Thanks to her operational skills that match her acumen for talent engagement, this location exceeded its budget last year, lowered expenses and reduced shrink in a location that has struggled with theft and other security issues.
Amy’s leadership is evident on the floor, too. She is known for enhancing the shopping experience for customers by organizing contests during events and inviting shopper interaction and feedback, to make sure that the store is on the right track.
The store’s performance in a complex and often-challenging market garnered company attention. In 2024, Amy was named an Awards of Excellence winner for Store Manager of the Year, Giant Food’s most prestigious honor for store managers.
Not one to rest on any laurels, Amy continues to move her team and store forward. On any given day, one can find her at the store sharing customer feedback with associates, setting ambitious but achievable sales targets and sharing open dialogue that promotes empowerment.
She works with others outside the store as well, whether partnering with local law enforcement, teaming up on joint initiatives with other nearby businesses or providing employment opportunities and financial support to the nonprofit Marian House that helps at-risk women and children, a program that also highlights her dedication to empowering others.
