Americans Support SNAP

According to a national survey conducted by Fabrizio, Lee & Associates, most American voters (70%) favor the SNAP program and 59% oppose reducing SNAP benefits. Nearly two-thirds of American voters (65%) agree SNAP is a hunger program, not a nutrition program, and 57% support a national standard of what can and cannot be bought using SNAP benefits.

Make SNAP More Efficient

The more efficiently SNAP operates, the greater the impact every SNAP dollar has on recipients and their communities.

Innovation Through The Years
  • Industry innovation has helped SNAP become more efficient and flexible, including transitioning from paper stamps to electronic debit cards (EBT cards) and investing in online SNAP EBT payment nationwide.
  • The grocery industry has worked with Congress, USDA and state agencies to ensure that SNAP benefits are accessible nationwide, allowing recipients to use their EBT cards seamlessly across state lines when traveling, relocating, shopping near state borders or when they are displaced during natural disasters.

States Can Save Billions by Reducing SNAP Error Rates and Fraud
  • Error rates measure the accuracy of each state’s eligibility and benefit determinations. Payment errors include both underpayments and overpayments of SNAP benefits.
  • Reducing the overpayment rate by state agencies—which was 10%, or $10.5 billion, in 2023—would help streamline the program's cost without harming those who rely on SNAP.
  • USDA and state governments should prevent criminals from stealing from the SNAP program by using card skimmers that access a user’s account and credentials.

Keep SNAP Strong

SNAP is facing proposed state and federal changes, which could impact the ability of millions of American seniors, children, and people with disabilities to purchase the groceries they need. Any changes to the program should make SNAP stronger and more efficient, particularly by helping state agencies make more accurate payments and stopping criminal fraud.
