Facts about the nation’s essential $6 per day hunger program.

SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is facing state and federal changes that could impact the ability of millions of American seniors, children, and people with disabilities to purchase the groceries they need. Any changes to the program should make SNAP stronger and more efficient, particularly by helping state agencies make more accurate payments and stopping criminal fraud that steals SNAP benefits from those who need them the most.

A Hunger Program

SNAP is a critically important hunger program that helps Americans afford food during difficult times. It ensures participants can supplement their own finances to feed their families. SNAP reduces food insecurity by as much as 30%, and adult SNAP beneficiaries incur about $1,400 less in medical costs per year than non-participants.

An Economic Generator

SNAP positively impacts local communities, farmers and food producers by providing temporary food security to seniors, the disabled, and families with young children while keeping jobs and tax dollars in the local communities in times of economic challenge. SNAP generates $1.50 for local economies for every $1 spent.

A Food Lifeline

Fifty percent of all SNAP transactions include at least one additional form of payment with which other items are purchased. Only the first items scanned will be counted toward the SNAP transaction. The reality is that the refrigerators and pantries of SNAP participants closely resemble those of the average shopper.

Not A Handout

SNAP has work requirements that significantly limit benefits if participants do not work. States may enact legislation to create additional work and volunteer pathways to assist SNAP participants in meeting these requirements. SNAP restricts the purchase of alcohol, tobacco, hot ready-to-eat foods and beverages, and household non-food products.
