This presentation will discuss the impact that the federal medical privacy regulations (commonly called the HIPAA Privacy Rule) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), as significantly revised by HHS in January 2013 and interpreted in Guidance by HHS in September 2013, have on supermarket retail pharmacy operations.  Customized (patient-specific) communications programs, typically sponsored by pharmaceutical companies, will be discussed, along with operational matters, such as business associates, liability and enforcement, analytics and “de-identified” data, and “hybrid” entities.
