Arlington, VA – In response to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) guidance released today on voluntary sodium reduction targets, FMI – The Food Industry Association is pleased to see FDA incorporated recommendations from industry stakeholders on the importance of establishing science-based, practical, and achievable sodium reduction goals.

FMI welcomes the agency’s efforts to ensure sodium reduction targets are consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the average food consumption patterns in the U.S. FMI also supports FDA’s decision to extend the recommended amount of time for businesses to achieve voluntary sodium targets to two and a half years.

The food industry works tirelessly to deliver a consumer marketplace full of healthy, accessible and nourishing food choices along with information to support healthful eating patterns for all consumers. While FMI continues to review FDA’s guidance, we look forward to working with our member companies and other industry stakeholders to continue providing the public with safe, nutritious and affordable food options.
