Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the Food Safety and Inspection Service’s (FSIS’s or the Agency’s) proposed rule and proposed determination, “Salmonella Framework for Raw Poultry Products,” published in the Federal Register on August 7, 2024 (the Proposed Framework). As the food industry association, FMI works with and on behalf of the entire industry to advance a safer, healthier, and more efficient consumer food supply chain. FMI brings together a wide range of members across the value chain — from retailers that sell to consumers, to producers that supply food and other products, as well as the wide variety of companies providing critical services — to amplify the collective work of the industry. More information about our organization is available at www.FMI.org.

FMI shares FSIS’s commitment to ensuring that consumers can trust their food is safe and wholesome. The food industry for years has focused on enhancing pathogen control across the board for both FSIS- and Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-regulated products. FMI member companies employ a wide range of strategies to prevent and control foodborne pathogens, ranging from preharvest interventions, harvesting and processing controls, supply chain controls and requirements, and a strong focus on distribution and retail operational safety. Through these efforts, and in partnership with FSIS and FDA, American consumers enjoy the safest food supply in the world. Still, our members continue to do more, as we want every eating occasion to be a safe one.
