House Committee Approves Farm Bill

Jul 12, 2012
Early Thursday morning, the House Agriculture Committee approved the House Farm Bill, the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2012 (FARRM - H.R. 6083) by a 35-11 vote.  The committee report now awaits action from House leaders over whether H.R. 6083 will be considered for floor action.  A large portion of the committee’s debate focused on the level of cuts to the SNAP food assistance program.  The bill would cut $16.5 billion in SNAP funding over the next ten years.  This level is significantly higher than the $4 billion in SNAP cuts contained in the Senate-passed Farm Bill but lower than earlier projected cuts in proposed budgets.  The timing of consideration on the House floor and final passage remains uncertain to address the funding to farm programs, which expires on September 30, 2012.  More information on the FARRM Act is available on the House Agriculture Committee site here.
