Effective Risk Communication: Whose Risk? Whose Benefit?
Presenter
Marianne Smith Edge - Senior Vice President, Nutrition and Food Safety, International Food Information Council (IFIC) and IFIC Foundation
Mainstream and social media continue to fill the airways with investigative reports about food safety, food processing, and perceived public health risks. Consumer research by the International Food Information Council (IFIC) reveals that consumers have very little knowledge about food and food production and are therefore easily misguided by quirky headlines and subsequent (food safety) articles leaving consumers more concerned than the issue actually warrants. In this multi-platform, multi-media environment, how do we separate the real risks from the perceived risks without increasing unnecessary fear and concern? This ‘hands on’, case study, interactive session will provide insights to develop effective risk communication messages that will improve public understanding while decreasing uncertainty about food and perceived risks associated with food. Participants will have an opportunity to apply guiding principles to craft messages that will improve consumer understanding.
