At FMI’s recent Energy and Store Development Conference, Neil Stern from McMillanDoolittle shared his seven themes for retailers to consider about store design. Based on these themes, recapped by Supermarket News, here’s a picture of what store design for food retail might look like in the future.

Imaging your grocery store is right around the corner and is part of the fabric of your local community. It’s an intimate store, with bright visuals that delight when you enter. You rely on the store for your regular shopping, but you also occasionally go there for regular culinary tastings. The store has areas where you can mix and match treats to make your own trail mix or even blend together cut fruit for a salad. This future store also specializes in your favorite food and caters to your need for at-home grocery delivery.

Creative and innovative store design will be at the heart of making this future grocery store a reality. With trends like a more diverse consumer base and the ability for consumers to call the shots driving store design of the future, we are sure to see more and more stores that follow these themes.
