FMI Mission & Philosophy

FMI Mission

FMI is designed to help the grocery retailer and wholesaler discharge their responsibilities to the customer in moving food from the producer to the consumer in the most efficient possible manner. The corporate characteristics of integrity, awareness, open-mindedness and objectivity are fundamental in the administration of FMI. Through its officers, committees, and staff, FMI utilizes its full resources and brings together the best available minds to ensure that programs are sound and in the public interest. In this area there can be no compromise. This means that the members must be willing to share; the staff must be chosen from the best available professional talent; and, the guidance FMI seeks must be from the most dispassionate and best qualified outside advisors. And, in all of FMI's activities and actions, the interests of the consumer will be given first consideration.

FMI Statement of Philosophy

Problem Solvers:

  • It is vital to our success that we discipline ourselves to love problems.
  • We solve problems quickly and we follow-up – often with a handwritten note in the case of members.

Professional:

  • We live within our budgets.
  • We focus on FMI's Action Plan in addition to the problems that come to us directly.
  • We help our members anticipate problems by spotting trends early.
  • When we find ourselves in opposition to other groups, we make no permanent enemies – this isn't personal.

Members:

  • Our members come first. They are our customers and their support makes possible everything else we do.
  • But, we also have other constituents. Exhibitors are customers too (and often think they are members) and our own staff members in other departments are also important customers for each of us. Beyond these two groups, each department will have their own list of additional customers.

We:

  • We are a team organization that succeeds or fails together.
  • We don't pass the buck when members call us or ask for help at meetings.
  • We treat each other with respect.
  • Understanding these very basic principles is the solid beginning to a successful career for every FMI associate.
