Current State Status: There are currently no State Certified Food Protection Manager requirements. Person in charge needs to demonstrate food safety knowledge and answer inspector’s questions. However, beginning January 2, 2010, retail food stores that prepare food will be required to have at least one Certified Food Protection Manager per location.

    State does not approve courses. SSM may be used to prepare for voluntary certification exam.

Local Requirements: State home rule statutes permit counties in New Jersey to have stricter food safety requirements than current state law.

Summary of Code Requirements: State does not currently require person in charge to be a Certified Food Protection Manager. Retail food establishments will be required to have a person in charge that is a CFPM beginning January 2, 2010. Currently person in charge must be able to answer food safety questions posed to him/her by the health inspector. Taking the SuperSafeMark® course is an excellent method of obtaining knowledge of food safety principles.
