Current State Status: State requires person in charge to demonstrate knowledge of food safety as outlined in 1999 FDA Food Code. Passing a Certified Food Protection Manager exam is one way to demonstrate knowledge.

  • Food Safety Training Required Food Handlers: No
  • SafeMark Classroom Training Approved: Yes
    State does not approve courses. Will accept any Conference for Food Protection approved training, including SafeMark™.
  • Minimum Number of Training Hours Required: 0
  • SafeMark Online Training Approved: Yes
    State does not approve courses. However, because SafeMark™is Conference for Food Protection approved, may be used for voluntary certification.
  • Training Frequency Required: N/A
  • SafeMark National Registry Exam Approved: Yes
  • Certification Exam Required: No, voluntary

Summary of Code Requirements: Food protection manager certification is voluntary but can be used to meet “demonstration of knowledge” requirement. Beginning January 1, 2010, the State will require food protection manager certification and the State is encouraging managers to get certified ahead of that date. The State has no intention of approving training courses and will only require that a person pass a Conference for Food Protection approved exam.
